Individual Support Services (ISS)

SMVI provides two very different kinds of ISS. We provide the traditional ISS, i.e. tailor-made supports according to need and provided in the individual's home, and we provide a very innovative support service which we call "Adult Leisure".

Traditional ISS depends on what the individual needs/wants. The services provided are completely & given by the individual's (or his/her family's) requests. Some of the services we are presently providing in traditional ISS are: banking; shopping; bill paying; recreation; transportation assistance; respite; case management; in home attendant care; management of entitlement benefits, i.e. food stamps, Social Security, energy assistance, public assistance, etc.; housekeeping; making and keeping medical appointments; medical equipment purchase, rental and repair; menu planning; community integration; crisis intervention and follow-up; referrals; support group meetings for families; and counseling. However, this is not an all inclusive list. We meet with each individual and his/her family or advocates to ascertain the needs and wishes mad coordinate our services to meet those needs and wishes.

Adult Leisure ISS is an SMVI service designed to meet the needs of those individuals who would like to be out and involved in the community but have no desire, or who are not capable of, being involved in Traditional Day or Employment Programs. SMVI developed this program in response to the emerging needs of several of our Supported Employment Workers whose health issues meant they were no longer capable of maintaining regular employment. Instead of asking these individuals our usual question: "What kind of a job would you like?" we asked them: "What would you like to do during the day?" We got many and varied answers. The specific Adult Leisure Services we provide are agreed upon monthly at a regular meeting between the individuals, their families and our staff. To date these services have included: Water aerobics; West End Dinner Theater; Adventure World; bowling; movies; boat cruises with lunch; museums; The Baltimore Aquarium; Dave and Buster's Adult Arcade; Line Dancing Classes; Professional Sporting Events; Bowie Baysox games; weight training at a gym; Beauty Spa Day; and Arts and Crafts. This is not an inclusive listing and services will be added and subtracted as the individuals decide.

The three distinctive features of the Adult Leisure Program are: 1. It makes community integration a reality for those individuals who are not capable of working every day and who would otherwise have to remain isolated at home; 2. The activities scheduled are entirely based upon the needs and wishes of the individual and/or the family; and, 3. There is no limit to how creative we can be in tailoring ISS services.
